We’re excited to launch our next community-driven Project Challenge right here at Axelera AI: Smarter Spaces. Following the success of Pioneer 10, this new challenge invites you to think smaller, closer, and more personal as you bring edge AI into your immediate surroundings. AI should live in your space, not in the cloud!

As developers, makers, engineers, IoT enthusiasts and AI tinkerers, your mission is simple:

Embed edge intelligence into the places people live, work, visit and play, while keeping data local, private, and out of the cloud.

What is Smarter Spaces?

In this challenge, you’ll build an AI-powered system for your home, workspace, or building that can:

  • Sense and understand its environment via camera(s) or other sensors

  • React meaningfully (e.g. control devices, send alerts, trigger automations, detect objects or events)

  • Operate fully offline (even if internet connectivity is available)

  • Maintain privacy, reliability, and resilience

Some possible directions you could consider:

  • 🛡️ Smart security or package detection (without sending video to the cloud)

  • 🦺 Safety & compliance monitoring in workshop or shared spaces

  • 💡 Context-aware lighting, HVAC, or appliance control

  • Gesture- or occupancy-driven UI or interfaces

  • 🏠 Home, workplace or life automation through edge AI

As always, you’re encouraged to get super creative, but with an eye on realism and edge feasibility. After all, if you’re selected, you’ll actually have to build your project and make it work!

What You’ll Receive (The Kit)

We want you to hit the ground running while still having freedom to customise your build. The free edge AI kit includes:

  • Axelera Metis M.2 (to accelerate vision AI)

  • Orange Pi 5 Plus host system (provided via our awesome partner in this project challenge, Orange Pi)

  • 4× Cameras (RTSP/USB 1080p, ONVIF-compatible)

    • 2 × Sonoff CAM-S2

    • 2 × Sonoff CAM-PT2

  • HDMI display (7–10”) for local feedback or monitoring

  • Networking & accessories

    • WiFi board (for optional connectivity)

    • Mini-router

    • Mounts, cables, power supplies as needed

This mix is designed to let you iterate fast on vision + edge. You’re free to add your own sensors, modules, software, models or hardware as needed.

Even though your project will need to fully operate offline, you might notice that WiFi options are included. This is in case you may want to set up a local WiFi network to reduce reliance on cabling, or for simpler data exchange. So wireless data is totally fine (great, in fact!) but even that wireless network must be local.

So your project can be connected to the internet, but it also needs to be fully operational when it’s offline, too.

We’re proud to partner with Orange Pi on this, as their boards bring amazing capabilities for edge systems and form a perfect match with Metis and our software stack. If you’ve spent any time here on the Axelera AI community, you’ll already know that Orange Pi + Metis is a great combo.

What’s In It for You, And the Community

Smarter Spaces is more than an IoT or automation contest. It’s a chance for you to:

  • Build real, deployable AI systems and add them to your portfolio. You keep your IP.

  • Explore offline-first vision pipelines using Voyager SDK (that’s where the AI industry is moving, after all)

  • Share your learnings, code, and solutions with other makers

  • Capture attention in the edge AI, IoT, and maker worlds

  • Win prizes, recognition, and experience for your next projects

    • 🥇First place: €1,000

    • 🥈Runners up: 2 x €500

From the community side, we’ll be curating and showcasing standout projects, producing spotlight case studies, and amplifying your work through our channels and partner networks (including Orange Pi’s awesome and vast audience).

How It Works & Timeline

  1. Pitch your idea

Describe your concept: what you’ll sense, how you’ll react, which hardware/software you’ll use, and why it matters.

  2. Selection & distribution

We’ll choose a 10 proposals and send out kits to those selected.

  3. Build & iterate

Develop your project over a period of X weeks, posting regular build updates, sharing challenges, and getting help and feedback.

  4. Submit & demo

You’ll provide a demo video, project write-up, and code repo for your finished project, and your chance for the grand prizes.

  5. Judging & awards

We’ll evaluate for originality, technical merit, completeness, presentation, and edge viability.

Submissions are now closed, but stay tuned to find out which projects have been selected soon!

I love this concept of “Smarter Spaces”! Here’s an idea I’m thinking of exploring for the challenge:

Project Title: Silent Guardian — Edge-AI Safety Assistant for Home & Workshop

An always-on local AI system that understands its surroundings using the provided cameras and sensors — but without sending any data to the cloud. It detects safety risks and environmental patterns in real-time.

Example Use Cases:

  • Detects open flames, smoke, or sparks in a workshop and automatically cuts power or alerts the user.

  • Recognizes when someone falls or collapses and sends a local network alert to nearby devices (e.g., a smart display or phone on LAN).

  • Tracks tool usage patterns to remind users about misplaced or overheating tools.

  • Learns typical motion/activity patterns and adjusts lighting or ventilation accordingly — all processed on-device.

I've actually always thought of home-automation but never fully gotten into it. I did however recently purchase a raspberry pi 5 and am about to get a 1tb nvme ssd to attach so this is in my line of curiosity.

The thing about home automation is it becomes super addictive! You start off with a few practical devices, like your lights and a window blind, and before long you’ve got Zigbee smoke detectors in the garage and a smart door bell with NFC for arming the house alarm! 🤣

The Orange Pi is an awesome foundation for home automation, and coupled with the Metis M.2 it becomes way smarter than anything comparable, especially at the low price point (not that you have to pay for the kit if you’re selected for Smarter Spaces, though!).

Keep us posted on how it goes, @Cherryland120 !

I have submiited my project

Project Title: Smart Office Environment Monitor

The Smart Office Environment Monitor is a compact IoT-based system designed to analyze and optimize indoor air quality in office spaces (typically 25–30 m²).
It leverages an ESP32-S3 microcontroller equipped with I²C environmental sensors and a SPI TFT display, combined with an Orange Pi 5 edge server running RKLLM AI for real-time analysis and intelligent recommendations.

Our goal is to make office spaces smarter, healthier, and more adaptive by continuously monitoring environmental conditions and helping employees stay in an optimal comfort zone for productivity and well-being.

Key Features

  • Real-time air quality analysis (CO₂, temperature, humidity, pressure).

  • Automatic alerts and AI recommendations.

  • Local edge AI processing — no need for cloud connectivity.

  • Energy-efficient and privacy-friendly design.

  • Modular and extensible (future support for TVOC, HCHO, and light sensors).

Impact & Vision

Poor indoor air quality significantly reduces productivity and comfort in workspaces.
This project aims to improve workplace health and efficiency using accessible open-source hardware and on-device AI reasoning.
By integrating environmental sensing with edge intelligence, we envision future offices that self-optimize based on real conditions, fostering both sustainability and well-being.

Very cool, nice work! It could even adjust environmental settings for optimum employee performance, as much as comfort… 🤣 Although that feels a bit Evil Mega Corporation 🤣

Also, I love ESP32-S3. Such great devices for home/work auto. I actually have a couple on order myself that I want to experiment with turning into Home Assistant mic satellites!

Hello All,
I am so glad to be part of this community. This is my first time participating in this . I am very excited.

Did you know nearly 30% of home break-ins happen through unlocked doors or open garages?

After a long day, you finally lie down, and your partner asks—‘Did you close the garage door?’

SafeHaven ensures you never have to wonder again

SafeHaven uses smart, privacy-focused cameras powered by the Axelera Metis M.2 and Orange Pi 5 Plus to keep an eye on your home’s entry points — doors, garage, and backyard. It can spot suspicious activity or notice if you’ve accidentally left something open, and it does all this completely offline, sending instant alerts and taking action right when it matters

Area

Feature

How it works

Door/Backyard Security

Suspicious Activity Detection

Outdoor camera detects loitering or repeated door-handle motion using motion vector + person keypoint models.

Garage Monitoring

Door Open/Close State Detection

Edge-AI detects if the garage door is open beyond a threshold time using frame-difference analysis + object detection on the door panel.

Local Intelligence

Offline Inference

Runs all models on-device with the Metis M.2 accelerator—no cloud dependency, preserving privacy.

Smart Alerts

Real-Time Notification & Display

Local HDMI display shows visual alert + Sonoff-connected buzzer/light triggers.

Fail-Safe Control

Auto-Close or Lock

Optionally trigger a relay to close garage or lock door automatically if open > X minutes.

Bonus info ( not related to the hackathon)
The kit is going to find its forever home in below project.

In rural Indian villages, where unreliable internet limits access to advanced tools, farmers often spend hours manually sorting tomatoes by color and ripeness—a labor-intensive process prone to errors and waste.

I need to get permission from my dad on  deploying a simple camera integrated with the Axelera Metis M.2 accelerator for on-site classification of green, semi-ripe, and fully ripe tomatoes.

Operating entirely offline without cloud dependency, it enables precise sorting at the source, reducing inaccuracies and streamlining the workflow.

The outcome is accelerated grading, minimized spoilage, and enhanced profitability for small-scale farmers, empowering sustainable agriculture in connectivity-challenged areas

Regards,
Shashi
